Lisbon Agreement Fee Decrease in Samoa

We don’t see Lisbon Agreement fee changes often, but we have one in Samoa this week.

What is the Lisbon Agreement?

Most people are familiar with the Madrid and PCT treaties; fewer are familiar with the Lisbon System.

The Lisbon Agreement and its latest revision, the Geneva Act of 2015, provide for the international protection of appellations of origin and geographical indications through a single procedure with WIPO. Appellations of origin and geographical indications are distinctive product designations that require a qualitative link between the product they refer to and its place of origin.

Champagne, Cognac, Roquefort, and Tequila are real-world examples of names protected by the Lisbon protocol.

Samoa joined the Lisbon System in 2019. Much like the Madrid Protocol, Lisbon fees are paid in Swiss Francs (CHF), which requires occasional rebalancing due to currency fluctuations.

Highlights of the fee decrease:

  • Individual fee for each international registration will decrease from CHF 187 to CHF 162.
