LEGALWEEK WRAPS UP

LegalWeek kicked off on Monday in New York and moved into high gear Tuesday with LeVar Burton as the keynote speaker, talking about the power of storytelling.

As you can imagine, references to Artificial Intelligence and/or Chat GPT were everywhere, and there were a number of new product launches focused on AI. There weren’t a lot of IP-specific sessions, but there were several Legal Ops-focused sessions that were relevant for an IP audience.

We’ll be covering the conference in more detail in this weekend’s video update – stay tuned!

USPTO DELAYS EFFECTIVE DATE OF NON-DOCX FILING FEE

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) published a final rule in the Federal Register on August 3, 2020, that includes a fee for patent applications that are not filed in the DOCX format.

 

The fee only applies to non-provisional utility applications and not to design, plant, or provisional applications.

 

The effective date of this new fee was most recently delayed in a final rule published in the Federal Register on December 29, 2022, and was scheduled to become effective on April 3, 2023.

 

Through a new final rule, the USPTO is delaying the effective date of this fee until June 30, 2023.

EPO FEE UPDATES SET TO KICK IN ON APRIL 1

Next week will be your last opportunity to beat the April 1st price increase at the European Patent Office (EPO). Most fees are increasing by 4-6%, so it’s worthwhile for you to check and see if you have anything that can be filed or renewed next week.
